It starts with the most ordinary warning in modern life: a phone banner, in red, saying storage is almost full. What follows is a clear-out that turns into a negotiation over what a life is allowed to keep.
The narrator works through the phone by thumb — nine hundred screenshots, a blurry cat, three videos of bread, downloads never opened. All of it can go. Then the scrolling reaches one file, known only by its length: a voicemail, forty-one seconds long. The thumb that deleted everything else hangs over Delete, and shakes.
“Delete the whole summer, keep her goodbye”
Chorus
The voicemail is from Grandma — “like there's another one.” Nothing grand happens in it, and that is the point: a game show too loud, a kettle starting to scream, a question about whether the narrator has eaten, goodbye said four times for the machine. Against that, the phone can have July and every clip at the lake. The banner disappears. For a day.
When the phone asks again, the same trade is made, this time with a steady thumb, because the alternative is unthinkable:
“Not the one voice I can't replace”
Chorus
Then the bridge lands the sting. The whole sacrifice never had to happen at all:
“There was a button. I never scrolled that far. Ninety-nine cents a month.”
Bridge
The last chorus flips one word — “Keep the whole summer, keep her goodbye” — and the song closes the way the voicemail sounded: ordinary, domestic, the kettle on. No other song we released this year made a storage warning carry this much memory. That’s why it’s our AI Song of the Year.
